Improved chronologic resolution by combining bio- and magnetostratigraphy.
Biostratigraphy records
the sequential distribution of organisms many of which are sensitive
to environmental factors and therefore facies dependent.
Magnetostratigraphy records the sequence of reversals of the geomagnetic field in a stratigraphic section. As the reversals are globally synchronous and independent of the palaeo environment, the magnetic polarity zones are facies independent.
A chronostratigraphical framework independent of facies and palaeo environmental factors can therefore be built by combining these two disciplines: Magnetostratigraphy and Biostratigraphy.
While the latter gives an approximate age, the former calibrates these ages by correlation with the established global polarity scale.
In
this report it was done for the Triassic in the Nordkapp Basin using
the time scale
of Ogg and Gradstein from 2012 enabling the dating of the sequence
boundaries and changes in sedimentation rates and accomodation space.
